What is expected of a firefighter?
As an active firefighter with Enterprise Volunteer Fire Company, you will be required to perform a wide variety of tasks. These tasks may include rescue and care of victims as well as fire prevention and community services. We urge you to consider the entire job of firefighter and not just the exciting or glamorous aspects. What follows is intended to give you a better understanding of the job. Who can be a Firefighter?
There are four ways to Volunteer with EVFC.
- Junior Firefighter - A junior firefighter is anyone form the age of 16 to 18. They will be expected to make calls just like Active Firefighters, but do so for the purpose of on the job training.
- Active Firefighter - An active firefighter, after successfully completing the appropriate training will be able to use his/her skills in the field.
- Fire Police - As fire police a member will respond to calls in their personal vehicles along with fire apparatus and assist firefighters and police officers in controlling the surroundings and securing the fire scene.
- Ladies' Auxiliary - Although we encourage women to volunteer as firefighters, those who aren't interested but would still like to become involved with the Fire Service may want to consider this option. Ladies' Auxiliary members provide support to firefighters in the form of refreshments and food on and off fire scenes, etc.
What kind of training do I need?
You must have or be willing to attend a NJ Fire School for FireFighter 1 training, or other training appropriate for your membership such as a Fire Police class. The Fire Department will cover the cost of this training. The department may also covers the cost for EMT training, although it is not required to volunteer.
Do I need Firefighter 1 before I can join the company?
No, We will provide on the job training, and we will arrange for you to attend Firefighter 1 within the first year.
When is training?
There are spring and fall classes offered 2 evenings a week with occasional Saturday classes.
What About Gear?
All active members will be supplied with turnout gear, and a fire pager.

Do I need a physical?
As a member you will need to be in general good health. The fire house will assist in setting up an appointment for a physical with the company's doctor. The cost will be covered by the company.
Do I have the time?
Meetings are scheduled the first, second, and fourth Monday of every month at 8:00 pm; drills are scheduled for the third Monday.
Response to fire call is expected as often as possible. Members must respond to 5% of the yearly total.
Are there incentives?
Yes, PRIDE; pride in yourself, and your Fire Department. Pride in your dedication to protect the lives and property of your neighbors. It is a privilege to be a volunteer firefighter.
There's parades, dinners, dances and trips too. And above all...as a volunteer firefighter you get to ride in the big red fire engine.
